What swingweight is and why it matters

Swingweight is how heavy a racket feels when you swing it, as opposed to how heavy it feels when you lift it. Two rackets can weigh the same on a scale yet swing completely differently, because swingweight depends on where the mass sits, not just how much there is. Mass out near the head is felt far more during the swing than mass down by the hand.

It matters because swingweight drives plough-through, stability and how tiring a racket is to use. A higher swingweight punches through the ball and holds firm on off-centre hits, but it is slower to manoeuvre and wears you down over a long match. Adding lead tape is the standard way to raise swingweight in a controlled way, and this calculator shows exactly what a given piece of tape will do before you stick it on.

Static weight, balance and swingweight are three different things

It helps to keep three numbers separate. Static weight is what the racket weighs on a scale, in grams. Balance is where it balances along its length, measured from the butt, and tells you whether the racket is head-light or head-heavy. Swingweight is the resistance to being swung about an axis near the handle, and it is the one you feel most in play.

Lead tape changes all three at once, but by different amounts depending on where you put it. A gram at the tip barely changes static weight yet moves balance and swingweight a lot. A gram in the handle changes static weight the same amount but hardly touches swingweight. Understanding that split is the whole point of customising with lead, and it is why position matters as much as mass.

What lead tape is and where it goes

Lead tape is a thin, self-adhesive strip of dense metal, sold by width and measured in grams. Tungsten tape is a denser, less toxic alternative that does the same job in a smaller strip. You apply it to the frame in small, weighed amounts, usually described by clock positions as if you were looking at the racket face like a clock.

Twelve o'clock is the very tip of the hoop. Ten and two o'clock are the upper shoulders of the hoop, three and nine o'clock are the sides at the widest point, and the throat and handle are the lower positions near the hand. Each spot pulls the racket's feel in a different direction, so players often combine positions, for example a little at three and nine to widen the sweet spot plus some in the handle to keep the balance in check.

The physics: why position matters so much

Swingweight is measured about an axis roughly 10 centimetres from the butt cap, which is about where your hand sits. The effect of a weight on swingweight grows with the square of its distance from that axis. Double the distance from the axis and you roughly quadruple the effect on swingweight for the same mass.

That square relationship is why tip weight is so powerful and handle weight is so quiet. A gram at the tip, far from the axis, adds a large chunk of swingweight, while the same gram near the handle adds almost none. The calculator uses this relationship directly, so the swingweight change it reports for each position reflects the real lever arm, not a flat rule of thumb.

A position by position guide

Each clock position has a job. The calculator measures the hoop positions back from the tip, so they shift with racket length, while the throat and handle stay fixed relative to the hand.

  • Twelve o'clock (tip): the biggest swingweight gain per gram and a strong shift toward head-heavy. Great for plough-through, but it slows the racket the most.
  • Ten and two o'clock: a large swingweight gain with a touch more stability across the upper hoop, slightly less extreme than the very tip.
  • Three and nine o'clock: widens the sweet spot and boosts twist stability on off-centre hits, with a smaller swingweight gain and less balance shift than the tip.
  • Throat: modest swingweight change and a gentle move toward head-heavy, useful for adding a little mass without much manoeuvrability loss.
  • Handle: raises static weight for stability and makes the racket more head-light, with almost no change to swingweight, so it steadies the frame without slowing your swing.

Balance points, head-light and head-heavy

Balance is reported in points from the racket's geometric centre, using the customiser's convention where one point equals an eighth of an inch, or about 0.3175 centimetres. If the balance point sits toward the handle from centre the racket is head-light, written HL, and if it sits toward the tip it is head-heavy, written HH.

So a reading like seven points head-light means the balance is seven eighths of an inch on the handle side of centre. Head-light rackets feel quick and are easier on the arm, which is why most player frames are head-light and add mass in the hand to stay that way. Head-heavy rackets feel more powerful and stable but slower. The calculator shows both your current balance and the new balance after the lead, plus the shift in points, so you can see which way you are moving.

Forward mode and reverse mode

The tool works in two directions. In forward mode you enter your racket's weight, balance and, if you know it, its swingweight, then choose a position and a mass of lead. It returns the new weight, the new balance in points, the change in swingweight and, if you gave a baseline, the new absolute swingweight. This answers the question, what will this piece of tape do.

Reverse mode flips it. You enter your current swingweight and a target swingweight, pick a position, and it tells you how much lead you need there to hit that target. This answers the question, how much tape do I need. If you do not know your current swingweight, forward mode still reports the change; you just will not get an absolute figure, since that needs a measured baseline.

How much to add, and adding it gradually

Small numbers go a long way. A couple of grams at the tip can shift swingweight noticeably, so start with less than you think and build up. A sensible method is to add tape in small steps, hit with it, and only add more if the racket still feels too light or unstable. Matching a second racket to a favourite is the same process in reverse: measure both, then use the calculator to find the lead that closes the gap.

Always add tape symmetrically across the two sides of the hoop, for example equal amounts at three and nine, so you do not skew the racket left or right. Press the tape down firmly and consider a layer of clear grip tape or heat-shrink over it so it does not peel mid-match.

Tuning for power, stability or comfort

If you want more power and plough-through, add mass high in the hoop and accept a slower, more head-heavy feel. If you want stability on mis-hits without much extra weight in the swing, three and nine o'clock is the classic choice, since it fights twisting at the cost of only a small swingweight rise.

If your arm is the priority, be careful with tip weight, because a high swingweight increases the load on the arm. A common comfort setup adds mass in the handle to raise static weight and keep the racket head-light and stable, which calms the frame down without making it harder to swing. The calculator lets you compare these approaches side by side before you commit any tape.

Tools, accuracy and manufacturer specs

For customising you want a scale that reads to a tenth of a gram, a ruler or balance board to check balance, and patience. The numbers here are physics-based estimates about a swing axis 10 centimetres from the butt, which is the standard convention, but the true swingweight of your exact racket depends on its full mass distribution.

Treat the results as a reliable guide for planning, then measure on a proper swingweight machine, such as an RDC or a Briffidi, if you need certainty, for instance when matching a pair for tournament play.
